How to authenticate Adidas

Adidas is the second most counterfeited athletic footwear brand globally. Its wide product range — from budget running shoes to premium Yeezy and Parley collaborations — means counterfeit quality varies enormously by target model. The Yeezy Boost 350 V2, the Stan Smith, and the Ultraboost are the most replicated. Authentication relies on three consistent signals across all adidas products: the Three Stripes alignment, the tongue label typography, and, on Boost-cushioned models, the Boost sole texture.

Key authentication signals

• Three Stripes alignment. On authentic adidas footwear the Three Stripes are equal in width, evenly spaced from each other, and follow the contour of the midfoot without bending abnormally around overlay seams. The stripes terminate at consistent points relative to the toe and heel. On fakes the stripes are often unequal in width, or their spacing varies across the shoe length.
• Tongue label typography. The tongue label carries the brand wordmark, model name, size, and country of manufacture in adidas's proprietary sans-serif typeface. Letter spacing and stroke weight are consistent throughout. Any condensed letterforms, inconsistent sizing between lines, or a substitute typeface are fake indicators.
• Boost sole texture. Authentic adidas Boost foam has a distinctive hexagonal pellet texture — individual pellets are visible and slightly raised, creating a knobbled surface that compresses and rebounds when pressed. Counterfeit Boost imitations use a smoother EVA foam or a printed Boost-pattern surface that lacks the tactile knobbled feel and shows pellets in a regular, ordered grid rather than the organic placement of genuine Boost.
• Trefoil or Performance logo placement. On Originals product the Trefoil logo is centered on the tongue or heel patch. On Performance product the Three-Bar mountain logo fills the same position. Either logo sits precisely centered with clean edge definition. Logos that are off-center, show color bleed between badge and backing, or have rounded edges from lower-quality tooling are fake indicators.
• Outsole bonding. The outsole perimeter shows no visible adhesive seepage and no gap between the outsole and the midsole. Particularly at the toe cap and heel wrap, the materials meet cleanly. Exposed glue, lifting edges, or visible join lines are production quality failures not found on authentic adidas.
• Style code cross-reference. The style code on the inner tongue tag must match the box label. Adidas style codes are 6 alphanumeric characters such as GY7657. Any deviation in format or a mismatch between tag and box is a primary verification failure.

Serial and reference numbers

Adidas uses a 6-character alphanumeric style code (also called an article number) that identifies the specific model and colorway. This code appears on the inner tongue tag, the box label, and on the insole of some models. For Yeezy releases the code additionally encodes the release season and variant. Cross-referencing the code against adidas's official product database or verified resale platforms confirms whether the code corresponds to a legitimate release in that specific colorway.

Common counterfeit red flags

• Three Stripes show variable width or inconsistent spacing when compared across the shoe length.
• Boost sole feels uniformly spongy rather than springy, or shows pellets in a regular geometric grid.
• Tongue label font is heavier-weight or condensed compared to the authentic adidas typeface.
• Outsole adhesive seepage visible at the midsole-to-upper junction, particularly at the toe.
