Carrera was founded in Austria in 1956 and is now owned by EssilorLuxottica. The brand produces high-performance and fashion eyewear with production split between Italy, Slovenia, and China — all three origins appear on genuine pieces, depending on the product tier. Carrera is best known for its motor-sport heritage and its use of Optyl, a proprietary ultra-lightweight thermoplastic resin used in many of its frames. The Carrera 1021/S, CA1030S, and the Heritage champion series are commonly counterfeited.

A consistent fake signal is the presence of a model number that does not match any Carrera product in the brand's catalog — counterfeiters frequently fabricate model codes rather than copy genuine ones.

Key authentication signals

• Optyl frame behavior. Optyl is thermoplastic: when warmed slightly (for example by holding near a heat source for a few seconds) it becomes pliable and can be adjusted, then returns to a rigid set position when cooled. Authentic Optyl frames can be shaped by an optician with gentle heat. Low-grade ABS counterfeits remain rigid and do not shape under moderate heat. Additionally, Optyl carries a distinctive feather-light weight — Carrera frames feel noticeably lighter than comparable-sized acetate or metal frames.
• Inner temple model and size markings. The inner face of each temple carries the model name or number, colorway code, lens size, bridge width, and temple length. Authentic engravings are clean, equally deep across all characters, and follow Carrera's standard font (medium-weight, upright sans-serif). Missing size information, uneven engraving depth, or a different font weight are counterfeit indicators.
• Left lens C logo etching. Authentic Carrera sunglasses carry a laser-etched "C" logo on the left lens at the upper outer corner. This mark is precision-etched — not painted or screen-printed. Tilt the lens under oblique light to confirm the etching sits in the lens surface rather than on it. Absent or painted-on marks are fake indicators.
• Hinge and screw quality. Genuine Carrera metal hinges use precision screws that are flush with the hinge body surface and show no visible burr at the screw slot. The hinge opens and closes with smooth, even resistance — not a loose rattle or sticky friction. Cheap visible-head screws or rattling hinges indicate low-quality counterfeit construction.
• CE conformity and UV marking on lenses. Authentic Carrera lenses meet CE certification for UV400 protection. The left lens carries the CE mark and UV400 designation either etched or printed. Absent UV markings on a claimed European-market piece are inconsistent with genuine Carrera production.

Serial and reference numbers

Carrera does not use a unique consumer-facing serial number. The model reference on the inner temple identifies the specific model and can be cross-referenced against Carrera's official catalog and authorized dealer listings. Counterfeit model references either do not exist in Carrera's catalog or are slightly altered versions of genuine references (e.g., transposed digits). A model code that returns no results on Carrera's official product search is a reliable fake signal.

Common counterfeit red flags

• Frame feels as heavy as standard acetate — genuine Optyl is noticeably lighter than most competitive materials.
• Inner temple engraving uses inconsistent depth with some characters lighter or deeper than adjacent ones.
• Left lens C logo is screen-printed and scratches off under fingernail pressure.
• Hinge screws protrude above the hinge body surface or show burring at the slot edge.
