Goyard is a Parisian trunk-maker founded in 1853, predating Louis Vuitton and remaining family-controlled. The house is famously non-advertised and does not operate an e-commerce platform, which contributes to mystique and counterfeit activity. The Goyardine canvas — coated with a hand-finished chevron dot pattern — is the primary authentication reference. The Saint Louis tote, the Anjou reversible tote, and the Artois tote are the most counterfeited models.

Goyard does not publish a consumer-facing serial number lookup system. No app or web portal authenticates Goyard bags by serial alone — the physical canvas and construction are the primary authentication tools.

Key authentication signals

• Goyardine chevron dot geometry. The repeating Y-shaped motif on Goyardine canvas is formed by individually applied dots. Authentic dots are oval-shaped — not perfectly round — with a slight rightward lean. The dot rows form a precise chevron pattern that meets at clean V-points. Counterfeits produce round, uniform dots with a flat silkscreened finish that lacks the subtle surface texture of the genuine hand-applied process.
• Canvas surface texture. Running a fingertip across authentic Goyardine canvas reveals a slightly raised, tactile surface over each dot. The texture is consistent across the panel. Fake Goyardine is flat-printed on coated canvas — no raised surface texture under the fingertip.
• Canvas reflectivity. Authentic Goyardine reflects light in distinct layers: the canvas base, the chevron coating, and the dot surface each catch light at different angles when the bag is moved. Counterfeits show a single flat reflective layer with no visible depth.
• Interior lining. The Saint Louis and Artois totes are lined with a coated cotton in the Goyard stripe pattern — vertical stripes in the same color palette as the canvas. The stripe width and color saturation must be consistent across the lining. A plain, unstriped lining or mismatched colors are fake indicators.
• Hardware and monogram personalization. Goyard is known for hand-painted monogram personalization — initials and patterns applied directly to the canvas by in-store artisans. Genuine personalization shows slight brush texture and color that sits on top of the canvas surface. Machine-applied or laser-printed personalization appears flat and uniform.
• Interior serial marking. A three-letter plus six-digit serial code is printed in small, discreet characters inside the bag. The digits encode production month and year. The print is intentionally small — conspicuously large or bold serials are inconsistent with authentic Goyard production.

Serial and reference numbers

Goyard uses an internal serial code of three letters followed by six digits; the digit sequence encodes production date by month and year. No public lookup database exists. Serial numbers cannot alone authenticate a Goyard bag — the physical Goyardine canvas texture and construction quality are the required accompanying signals. The brand does not issue authenticity cards or hologram stickers; their absence is expected and normal for all eras of production.

Common counterfeit red flags

• Chevron dots are round rather than oval, or lack the slight rightward orientation of authentic dots.
• Canvas surface is flat to the touch with no raised texture over the dot pattern.
• Lining is plain fabric rather than the Goyard-striped coated cotton interior.
• Serial number digits are large and prominently printed rather than small and discreet.
