How to authenticate Rimowa

Rimowa was founded in Cologne in 1898 and introduced the now-iconic parallel-groove aluminium shell in 1950. The grooved profile is a registered trademark, which means no other manufacturer may legally produce luggage with the same groove pattern. Since the LVMH acquisition in 2017 and a full rebrand in 2018, the product line is split into two primary materials: aluminium (Original, Classic) and polycarbonate (Essential, Hybrid). Counterfeits of both lines circulate on resale markets, with fake Essential polycarbonate cases being by far the most common.

Key authentication signals

• Groove geometry and uniformity. On authentic Rimowa cases all grooves are identically spaced and equal in width and depth across the full surface of the shell. On counterfeits one or more grooves are wider than the others — most commonly the centre groove — and the groove depth is shallower, making the ridges look less pronounced in raking light.
• Logo engraving on the shell. The "RIMOWA" wordmark on the exterior shell is engraved into the material and painted — the letters are thin and precise, and the registered trademark symbol (R in a circle) is present in the upper right. Counterfeit logos are printed or pad-stamped with thicker strokes and the trademark symbol is often absent or poorly formed.
• Interior "Made in" label. Authentic cases carry an interior label stating the country of manufacture (Germany, Czech Republic, or Canada — no other countries) alongside the manufacturing facility's geographic coordinates. The coordinates field is absent on all known counterfeits.
• NFC chip registration (2023 and later). Cases manufactured from 1 January 2023 carry an NFC tag integrated behind the telescopic handle base. Scanning the tag with any NFC-capable phone pulls the serial number automatically and links to Rimowa's registration portal. Pre-2023 cases have no NFC chip; claiming one on an older case is a red flag.
• TSA lock quality. Rimowa TSA combination locks use a smooth, precise click-through mechanism. Counterfeit locks feel gritty, skip notches, or require excessive pressure to turn the dials.

Serial and reference numbers

The serial number is engraved on the exterior frame near one of the hinges on modern production cases. On older aluminium Original cases the serial may be stamped into the body panel rather than the frame. The serial can be entered at rimowa.com to confirm the product is registered and to initiate the ownership certificate process. On 2023-and-later cases, Rimowa's own app reads the NFC chip and displays the serial number without manual entry. Serial numbers reported by multiple sellers are a common counterfeit signal — each genuine case has a unique number.

Common counterfeit red flags

• Centre groove is visibly wider than adjacent grooves, or groove depth is inconsistent across the shell.
• Interior label is absent, shows a country of manufacture other than Germany, Czech Republic, or Canada, or lacks geographic coordinates.
• Logo letterforms are thick and appear screen-printed rather than engraved.
• On a post-2022 case, no NFC chip is detectable behind the telescopic handle base.
