Balenciaga's City bag, launched in 2001, created the category of slouchy moto-inspired luxury bags and remains one of the most counterfeited bag silhouettes in the world. The house also produces the Hourglass, the Le Cagole, and the Neo Classic — all heavily replicated. Balenciaga introduced a season-letter coding system beginning with F/W 2003, giving authentic bags a dateable production identity that counterfeiters frequently misrepresent.

Authentic Balenciaga uses distressed calfskin (agneau) with a natural, irregular grain. The leather is notably soft and buttery to the touch, which is one of the hardest characteristics to replicate at counterfeit price points.

Key authentication signals

• Interior leather label format. The white rectangular label inside the City is stitched into the lining with a free bottom edge. The front face carries the brand name and style number in a lightweight sans-serif. The reverse carries a matching style number and the season letter. Both numbers on front and back must be identical — a mismatch is a definitive fake signal.
• Season letter system. Balenciaga assigned a letter of the alphabet to each season from F/W 2003 onward. The letter appears stamped on the reverse of the interior label. The sequence progresses A, B, C... with a new letter per season (two per year). Claiming an authentic pre-2003 City bag without a letter code is plausible; a post-2003 City without any letter is not.
• Attached mirror. City bags and most Balenciaga women's bags include a small leather-framed mirror attached to the main handle with a leather cord. The mirror frame matches the bag's leather in texture and color. A separately packed mirror (not attached from new) or a frame in a contrasting, lower-quality material is a fake indicator.
• Hardware weight and finish. Giant Hardware (GH) and Regular Hardware (RH) variants use different metal gauges. Silver-tone hardware on authentic City bags is weighty brass with a consistent brushed or shiny finish — not plated steel. Lightweight hardware that flexes under slight pressure is a fake signal.
• Calfskin grain consistency. Authentic agneau calfskin has a uniform fine grain across the panel with a soft, warm handle. No two genuine bags are identical — slight variation is expected and authentic. Counterfeits use stiffer corrected-grain or bonded leather with a uniform plastic-like feel and a chemical smell.
• Stitching on handle attachment. The top handle is attached at each end with a reinforced saddle-stitched panel. Stitch tension is consistent with no thread loops. Glued or machine-stitched handle attachments lacking the double-needle saddle stitch pattern are a production failure on counterfeits.

Serial and reference numbers

The interior label reverse carries the season letter and a style reference number. These two elements together date the bag to a specific Balenciaga collection. Post-2019 bags may additionally include a QR code or microchip for digital authentication. Silver hardware City bags made before F/W 2008 may have tags stamped "925" indicating sterling silver hardware — the absence of this mark on a bag claimed to be from that era is notable. No unique per-bag sequential serial number is used.

Common counterfeit red flags

• Front and back style numbers on the interior label do not match.
• Mirror is absent, separately packaged, or has a frame in a different leather texture than the bag body.
• Leather feels stiff, coated, or smells of chemicals rather than natural tannery.
• Hardware is hollow-sounding when tapped, or shows plating wear at friction points after minimal use.
