Away was founded in New York in 2015 and quickly became one of the most imitated direct-to-consumer travel brands. The brand's hardshell polycarbonate suitcases with integrated TSA combination locks and — on older models — a removable battery pack in the carry-on are its most recognised and most replicated features. Because Away operates primarily as a DTC brand, the resale and grey-market space contains both genuine used bags and counterfeits. The most helpful authentication signals are material quality, lock mechanics, and interior branding details.

Key authentication signals

• Shell material and finish. Away hardshell cases use a matte polycarbonate shell that has a uniform, fine-textured finish free of surface waviness or orange-peel texture. Counterfeits use an ABS or lower-grade polycarbonate with a slightly glossier surface and visible mould-line ridges along the panel edges.
• "AWAY" wordmark placement and quality. The brand name is debossed into the polycarbonate shell at the front face — the letters sit in a shallow, clean recess with sharp-edged walls. On counterfeits the wordmark is either a sticker, a pad-printed mark, or a very shallow emboss with rounded letter edges and visible tool marks at the corners of letterforms.
• TSA combination lock mechanism. Away's TSA lock uses Travel Sentry-approved hardware identifiable by a red Travel Sentry diamond symbol on the lock face. The lock dials have a firm, distinct click at each digit position; counterfeits feel loose, skip positions, or require excessive force. The keyhole slot for TSA master keys should be clean and precisely formed — not burred or misaligned.
• Interior compression system and lining. Authentic Away bags have a patented clamshell interior with a fabric compression panel secured by a plastic buckle at the centre. The lining fabric is a smooth polyester in a consistent colour with the brand's interior labels sewn at the top. Counterfeit linings use a thinner fabric with irregular tension in the compression panel and labels that are glued rather than sewn.
• Spinner wheel housing. Away uses dual spinner wheels per corner — eight wheels total on a carry-on — each mounted in a semi-enclosed polycarbonate housing. The housing is cleanly moulded and the wheel rotates freely without wobble. Fake cases often have four single-wheel corners (not dual), and the housings show flash or burrs from poor mould tooling.

Serial and reference numbers

Away does not publish a per-unit unique serial number in its consumer documentation. The product is identified by a model name and colourway. Interior labels state the product name and are matched to an order confirmation for warranty purposes. Away's lifetime warranty is linked to proof of purchase from an authorised retailer; warranty claims without a purchase record are not honoured, which means buyers of second-hand Away luggage should request the original receipt for full coverage.

Common counterfeit red flags

• Shell surface has a glossy or uneven finish rather than the matte, uniform polycarbonate texture of an authentic case.
• "AWAY" wordmark is a sticker or has rounded, poorly defined letter edges.
• TSA lock dials feel loose or skip digit positions without a distinct click.
• Spinner wheel corners have fewer than two wheels per corner, or the wheel housing shows mould flash.
