How to authenticate Gucci

About Gucci Authentication

Gucci has used a two-row serial tag on an interior leather tab since the 1980s. The format contains a style number and a supplier code — not a unique per-bag identifier. From approximately 2016 onward, most bags also include a QR code on a paper authenticity card inside the dust bag. The physical serial tag remains the primary authentication point because QR cards can be separated from genuine bags at resale and are also reproduced on fakes.

The most counterfeited current models are the GG Marmont, the Soho Disco, and the Ophidia series.

Key authentication signals

• Serial tag front face. Three center-justified lines: circled "R" trademark symbol, "GUCCI" in capital letters, "Made in Italy." The heat-stamp impression shows clean, consistent depth with slight leather compression. The circled "R" is frequently omitted on counterfeit tags.
• Serial number format. Rear of tag shows two rows of numerals only — no letters. Top row is the 6-digit style number; bottom row is the 4–6 digit supplier code. The font uses serifs (feet) on all numeral strokes. Any letters in the serial rows indicate a counterfeit.
• GG pattern registration. The interlocking GG pattern on canvas is continuous at all seam junctions. The pattern begins and ends at the same relative position on symmetric bag faces. Misaligned GG at seams is a primary fake signal.
• Hardware weight. GG hardware is cast from solid brass or zinc alloy — authentically heavy. The inner apertures of both G's within the interlocked logo are equal in size. Unequal apertures indicate inferior casting.
• Stitching color matching. Thread color matches the leather precisely throughout the bag — tan leather uses tan thread, red uses red, black uses black. Universal cream or dark-tan thread on varied-color leathers indicates fake construction.
• Webbing stripe alignment. On Ophidia and Web-stripe pieces the stripe is centered on the strap and matched at seam junctions. Miscentered or fraying stripes are a reliable fake indicator.

Date codes and serial markers

The style number (top row) and supplier code (bottom row) are shared across all bags of the same model in the same production batch — they are not unique per bag. The tag leather quality, heat-stamp depth, and numeric font are the diagnostic elements, not the numbers themselves. Post-2016 bags include a QR code on an authenticity card; scanning a genuine code routes to Gucci's verification system. A missing QR card on a post-2016 bag should prompt closer physical examination but is not definitive alone.

Common counterfeit red flags

• Serial tag sewn at an angle or sitting completely flush against the lining with no free bottom edge.
• Interior zip pocket lining color inconsistent with the main compartment lining.
• GG canvas hardware on the interior shows raw screw posts rather than a backing plate.
• Dust bag fabric is a noticeably smoother, thinner weave than the dense canvas used on authentic bags.
